A prop swap should not start with guesswork. If the old wheel is damaged, mislabeled in a service record, or missing the original box, the stampings on the prop itself are often the fastest way to confirm what you have. Knowing how to read propeller markings helps you avoid the two problems that waste the most time - ordering the wrong replacement and chasing a performance issue that is really a fitment mismatch.
What propeller markings usually tell you
Most marine propellers carry a set of cast, stamped, or laser-etched markings that identify the basic specification. On many props, that includes diameter, pitch, rotation, blade count, and a part number. Some also include hub series, material, model family, or manufacturer branding.
The exact format depends on brand and prop line. A stainless performance prop may have cleaner, more detailed markings than an older aluminum utility prop. Blade count
