3M 05206 Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 White 1 oz Squeeze Tube — Permanent One-Component Moisture-Curing Polyurethane | No Caulking Gun Required | Extended Working Time | Vibration, Swelling & Shock Resistant Bond | Above & Below Waterline | Handling Strength 48 Hours, Full Cure 5–7 Days

3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 White (05206) is the same industry-standard permanent 5200 polyurethane formula in the smallest available format — a 1 oz squeeze tube that requires no caulking gun. One-component, high-strength, moisture-curing, gap-filling polyurethane. Bonds wood, gel coat, and fiberglass with a permanent, flexible, waterproof seal above and below the waterline. Retains bond integrity during vibration, swelling, shrinking, and shock. Extended working time — standard cure formula allows more positioning time before tack develops compared to Fast Cure. Handling strength in 48 hours; full cure 5–7 days. Permanent bond — separation after full cure requires cutting or grinding. White. 1 oz squeeze tube.

Part Specifications

1 oz Squeeze Tube — Smallest 5200 Format, No Gun Required

The 05206 is the smallest available 5200 White format. It fills a specific gap in the 5200 family for jobs where volume and portability matter more than cost-per-oz:

  • Single small fittings: One cleat, one through-hull fitting, one drain plug, one rod holder base — jobs that consume only a fraction of a 3 oz tube and where the remaining product in a larger tube will skin over before the next use
  • Access-restricted locations: The small 1 oz tube can be worked into tight bilge spaces, below-deck locker corners, and narrow transom cavities where handling a 10 oz caulking gun is impractical
  • Toolbox and emergency kit: At 1 oz, the tube stores compactly in a marine toolbox, dock box, or on-board emergency kit for unplanned spot repairs at the ramp or on the water
  • No waste: On small jobs, a 1 oz tube is often fully consumed in a single session; larger formats leave unused product that may skin over at the nozzle between uses even when capped
  • When to size up: For more than two or three small fittings, use the 3M 05203 5200 White 3 oz. For full seam runs, multiple fittings, or deck-to-hull bonding, use the 3M 06500 5200 White 10 oz Cartridge.

Extended Working Time — Standard Cure Advantage

The 05206 uses the standard cure 5200 formula. Unlike the Fast Cure version, the standard cure provides extended working time before the surface begins to skin over:

  • Standard cure (this product): Longer open time before tack develops, giving more time to position fittings, align fastener holes, and clamp assemblies before the surface skins over. Handling strength in 48 hours; full cure 5–7 days.
  • Fast Cure 1 oz (06535): Tack free in 1 hour, full cure approximately 24 hours. Best when the fitting must be sealed and the boat returned to service quickly. The shorter open time means you must have all positioning completed before application.
  • Bond strength at full cure is identical — standard and Fast Cure 5200 reach the same permanent result; the difference is only in working time and cure speed.

Vibration, Swelling & Shock Resistance

5200’s tough, flexible polyurethane polymer maintains its bond under the dynamic stresses common to boat hardware and structural joints:

  • Vibration: Engine mounts, transom hardware, and hull fittings on powerboats experience continuous vibration at speed; the flexible cured 5200 bond absorbs and distributes vibration stress rather than cracking or loosening the joint
  • Swelling and shrinking: Wood hull planking and wood-cored deck structures expand and contract seasonally with moisture changes; 5200’s flexible cure accommodates substrate movement without losing seal integrity
  • Shock: Impact loads from chop, wave strikes, and hard landings stress through-hull fittings and deck hardware joints; the flexible permanent bond maintains seal at the joint under intermittent shock loading

Permanent Bond — Critical Consideration Before Applying

  • 5200 is a permanent adhesive sealant — once fully cured, joints cannot be disassembled without cutting or grinding the bond line, which damages bonded surfaces
  • Verify all fitting positions and fastener hole alignment before applying — standard cure’s extended working time gives more adjustment window, but once tack develops at 48 hours, repositioning is no longer possible without damaging the joint
  • If future disassembly may be required: use the serviceable 3M 4200FC White 10 oz (06560) instead

Application Notes

  • Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, wax, and loose material — wipe with acetone or isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry before applying
  • Cut the nozzle tip at 45° to the desired bead size; apply by squeezing the tube directly
  • Apply to one or both surfaces; press together firmly and secure with fasteners or clamps during cure
  • Moisture initiates cure — higher humidity and warmer conditions accelerate cure; cool or dry conditions extend handling and full cure times
  • Full cure 5–7 days — do not stress the joint, load the bond, or immerse below the waterline until fully cured
  • Uncured product: clean up with acetone or MEK. Cured product: must be cut or abraded for removal
  • Wear gloves — uncured polyurethane is difficult to remove from skin

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between the 05206 (1 oz) and the 06535 Fast Cure 1 oz?
A: Same 5200 formula in the same 1 oz squeeze tube format — the only difference is cure speed. The 05206 is standard cure: extended working time before tack, handling strength in 48 hours, full cure 5–7 days. The 06535 is Fast Cure: tack free in 1 hour, full cure approximately 24 hours. Choose standard cure when you need more positioning time; choose Fast Cure when you need faster return to service.

Q: Is 1 oz enough for a typical through-hull fitting installation?
A: For a single standard through-hull fitting, 1 oz is generally sufficient to bed the fitting flange. For larger through-hulls, multiple fittings, or applications requiring a full bead around a fitting plus fastener bedding, use the 3M 05203 5200 White 3 oz to avoid running short mid-installation.

Q: Can 5200 be removed after it cures?
A: No — 5200 is permanent. Separation after full cure requires cutting or grinding the bond line. If future disassembly may be needed, use the serviceable 3M 4200FC White 10 oz (06560) instead.

Q: How long before I can launch after using the 05206 below the waterline?
A: Full cure is 5–7 days — do not immerse below the waterline until fully cured. Handling strength in 48 hours means the joint can be handled without disturbing the bond, but the sealant is not at full strength or fully waterproof cure until 5–7 days.

Q: Why would I choose the 1 oz tube over the 3 oz?
A: The 1 oz format is best for single small fittings, access-restricted locations, and on-board emergency kits where the full 3 oz would not be consumed and the remainder would risk skinning over at the nozzle between uses. For two or more fittings or any job requiring more than a single small bead, the 3M 05203 5200 White 3 oz offers better value per oz.
