CDI 113-4808 — 3-Cylinder Power Pack | Johnson & Evinrude 60, 70 & 40 Jet Loop Charged | 1993–1998 | Superceded by Sierra 18-5774-2

Three cylinders going cold at once — or intermittently — on a Johnson or Evinrude loop-charged outboard usually points at the power pack. CDI 113-4808 is the current replacement for this application, covering 60, 70, and 40 Jet HP 3-cylinder loop-charged J&E engines from 1993 through 1998. Built-in 6700 RPM limiter, S.L.O.W. overheat protection (limits RPM to 2500 in an overheat event), and quick-start function. Supersedes Sierra 18-5774-2 and replaces a broad range of OEM J&E numbers.

Important: This power pack is for loop-charged engines only. It is not compatible with cross flow Johnson/Evinrude engines of the same horsepower range — confirm your engine type before ordering.

Confirm Fitment Before Ordering

Power pack fitment on J&E outboards depends on horsepower, year, and — critically — whether the engine is loop-charged or cross flow. Give us your Johnson/Evinrude engine model and serial number and we’ll confirm the correct power pack before you order — by email, text, or live chat.

Installation Notes

Install following the applicable Johnson/Evinrude service manual for your engine model and year. Verify stator and timer base condition before installing a new power pack — a faulty stator or timer base can damage a new CDI unit. Match ignition coil wire connections to the color-coded specifications in the service manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does the S.L.O.W. function do and is it active on this power pack?
A: S.L.O.W. (Speed Limiting Over Warning) is an engine protection feature that reduces RPM to approximately 2500 when the engine reaches an overheat threshold. It keeps the engine running at reduced power rather than allowing a full shutdown — giving you enough propulsion to get back to shore. The CDI 113-4808 includes the S.L.O.W. function, matching the OEM specification for this application.

Q: How do I confirm my engine is loop-charged versus cross flow?
A: Loop-charged and cross flow refer to the scavenging design of the two-stroke engine. J&E outboards of this era carry model designations that identify the engine type — your engine serial number decode or parts diagram will confirm it. If you’re not certain, give us your engine model and serial number and we’ll confirm before you order — by email, text, or live chat. Installing the wrong power pack type will result in a no-run condition.

Q: What are the symptoms of a failing power pack on a J&E 3-cylinder outboard?
A: Common symptoms include one or more dead or intermittent cylinders, misfires under load, hard starting, RPM ceiling well below the limiter, or a complete no-start with spark present at the coils. Because the power pack drives all three cylinders, partial failure often shows as a persistent rough-running or power loss condition before a full no-run event.

Q: Should I test the stator and timer base before replacing the power pack?
A: Yes — always. A failed stator or timer base produces symptoms that are nearly identical to a bad power pack. Installing a new CDI unit without ruling out the stator and timer base risks damaging the new pack. CDI Electronics publishes detailed ignition test procedures for J&E engines — work through the test sequence before replacing any single component.

Q: Why are there multiple Sierra part numbers listed — which one does this supersede?
A: CDI 113-4808 is the current part that supersedes Sierra 18-5774-2 (and the earlier Sierra 18-5774 and 18-5780). If your service manual or parts reference lists any of these Sierra numbers, the CDI 113-4808 is the correct current unit.
