3M 05955 Super Duty Rubbing Compound 1 Gallon — Aggressive P1000 Sand Scratch & Heavy Oxidation Removal for Marine Paint & Gel Coat | Hand or Machine Application

3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound is a high-cut, aggressive liquid compound designed to remove P1000 and finer sand scratches, heavy oxidation, and surface defects from all types of automotive paint surfaces and marine gel coat. The formula stays wet on the surface for extended working time, maintains a high rate of cut with constant medium pressure, and buffs to a high gloss with minimum effort after compounding. Suitable for both hand and machine (DA or rotary polisher) application — the hand application capability makes it useful for spot repair and confined areas as well as full machine-compounding workflows. The 1 gallon size is the professional shop volume for high-use detailing and boat yard operations. Also available in 1 qt (3M-05954) for lower-volume use.

Part Specifications

  • Part Number: 3M-05955
  • Size: 1 gallon
  • Compound Type: Super duty rubbing compound — aggressive, high-cut liquid formula
  • Application Method: Hand or machine (DA or rotary polisher)
  • Removes: P1000 and finer sand scratches, heavy oxidation, surface defects
  • Safe Surfaces: All types of automotive paint, marine gel coat
  • Working Properties: Stays wet for extended working time; high cut rate with medium pressure; buffs to high gloss with minimum effort
  • Also Available: 1 qt professional/retail size (3M-05954)

3M Compounding System Position

3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound is the heavy-cut starting point in a multi-stage paint correction or gel coat restoration workflow. It is more aggressive than intermediate compounds and cutting polishes, and is designed for surfaces where oxidation is heavy, sand scratches are P1000 or coarser, or surface defects are significant enough to require high abrasive cut to remove. After compounding with 3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound, follow with a finishing or ultrafine polish to remove compound marks and restore final gloss:

  • Step 1 — Heavy Compound: 3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound (3M-05955) — removes P1000 and finer sand scratches, heavy oxidation, and surface defects
  • Step 2 — Intermediate/Finishing Polish: 3M Finesse-It II Machine Polish (3M-05928) — removes compound swirl marks, refines surface to high gloss
  • Step 3 — Ultrafine Polish (optional, for maximum gloss): 3M Perfect-It EX Ultrafine Machine Polish (3M-06069 or 3M-06068) with 3M Perfect-It Ultrafine Foam Polishing Pad (3M-05751)
  • Step 4 — Protect: 3M Perfect-It Boat Wax (3M-36113), SiO2 sealant, or ceramic coating

For lightly oxidized or well-maintained gel coat that does not require heavy compounding, start with a lighter intermediate compound or cutting polish and skip the super duty step. Match compound aggressiveness to the severity of the surface defects — over-compounding a lightly oxidized surface wastes material and increases finishing work.

Application Notes

  • Machine application: Apply to a foam compounding pad (such as 3M Perfect-It Foam Compounding Pad, 3M-05737) on a DA or rotary polisher; work in overlapping passes at medium machine speed with constant medium pressure; the formula maintains cut rate throughout the working cycle
  • Hand application: Apply a small amount to a clean foam or microfiber applicator and work in circular or overlapping passes with moderate pressure; useful for spot repairs, tight areas, and surfaces where a polisher cannot safely be used
  • The formula stays wet for extended working time — do not add water; allow the compound to work until the residue begins to dry before wiping clean
  • Wipe compound residue with a clean microfiber towel before it fully dries; buff to a high gloss finish
  • Follow with a finishing polish to remove compound swirl marks before waxing or coating — Super Duty Rubbing Compound will leave compound marks that must be refined before the surface is ready for wax or sealant
  • Avoid application in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces — heat accelerates drying and reduces working time

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does P1000 sand scratch removal mean, and how do I know if I need Super Duty compound?
A: P1000 refers to the grit level of sandpaper — P1000 is a relatively coarse wet-sand grit used for heavy material removal, paint defect repair, and sanding runs or orange peel. If your gel coat or paint has been sanded with P1000 or coarser grits, or if the surface has heavy oxidation (chalky, faded, or rough to the touch), Super Duty Rubbing Compound has the abrasive cut needed to remove those defects. For lighter oxidation or finer sand scratches (P1200 or finer), a less aggressive compound or cutting polish will produce the same result with less compounding work.

Q: Can this compound be applied by hand, or does it require a machine?
A: Both — 3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound can be applied by hand or by machine (DA or rotary polisher). Machine application is more efficient for full hull or large panel work. Hand application is useful for spot repairs, tight areas, and surfaces where a power tool cannot be safely used. The formula maintains cut rate under medium pressure for both application methods.

Q: After using Super Duty Rubbing Compound, do I need to follow up with a finishing polish?
A: Yes — Super Duty Rubbing Compound removes heavy defects but leaves behind compound swirl marks that must be refined before the surface is ready for wax or protective coating. Follow with 3M Finesse-It II Machine Polish (3M-05928) to remove compound marks and restore gloss, then optionally with 3M Perfect-It EX Ultrafine Machine Polish (3M-06069) for maximum showroom-grade gloss before waxing with 3M Perfect-It Boat Wax (3M-36113).

Q: What is the difference between the 1 gallon (3M-05955) and 1 qt (3M-05954)?
A: Same formula — different sizes. The 1 gallon (05955) is the professional shop volume suited for high-use boat yard operations, detailing shops, and multi-vessel work. The 1 qt (05954) is suited for individual boat owners and lower-volume use. The 1 gallon offers better cost-per-oz value for high-volume applications.

Q: Is this product safe to use on marine gel coat, or is it only for automotive paint?
A: Safe for both. 3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound is designed for all types of automotive paint surfaces and marine gel coat. Gel coat is a polyester-based surface coating used on fiberglass boats and behaves similarly to automotive paint in compounding and polishing workflows, making Super Duty an effective tool for heavy gel coat oxidation removal and surface restoration.
