3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 White (06500) is the industry-standard permanent marine polyurethane trusted throughout the marine industry for over 50 years. One-component, high-strength, moisture-curing, gap-filling polyurethane that bonds aluminum, wood, gel coat, and fiberglass with a permanent, flexible, waterproof seal above and below the waterline. Weathering and saltwater resistant. Tack free in 48 hours; full cure in 5–7 days. Permanent bond — separation after full cure requires cutting or grinding. White. 10 oz cartridge for standard caulking gun.

Part Specifications

Standard 5200 vs 5200 Fast Cure — Choosing the Right Cure Speed

Both this product (06500) and the Fast Cure White cartridge (06520) produce the same permanent, high-strength 5200 bond. The only difference is cure speed:

  • Standard 5200 (this product — 06500): Tack free 48 hours, full cure 5–7 days. The longer open time before surface tack allows more working time to position, adjust, and clamp complex multi-piece assemblies before the surface skins over. The extended full cure is appropriate when the joint will be placed under structural load or immersed below the waterline immediately after launch.
  • 5200 Fast Cure White (06520 10 oz | 06535 1 oz | 05220 3 oz): Tack free 1 hour, full cure approximately 24 hours. Best when the repair must be completed and the vessel launched or returned to service within 24–48 hours, or when a shorter open work window is acceptable.
  • Bond strength at full cure is identical: Standard and Fast Cure 5200 produce equally permanent, equally strong bonds at full cure. The standard cure speed does not produce a stronger bond — it provides a longer working window before the surface skins over.
  • When standard cure is the better choice: Complex multi-piece assemblies such as keel fittings, multi-fastener deck hardware, or multi-panel hull planking sections where each piece must be positioned precisely before any tack develops; situations where the vessel will not be launched for 5–7 days and there is no schedule pressure to use Fast Cure; cold-weather applications where Fast Cure’s 1-hour tack window is too compressed for the work at hand.

Permanent Bond — Critical Consideration Before Applying

  • 5200 is a permanent adhesive sealant — once fully cured, joints cannot be disassembled without cutting or grinding the bond line, which damages bonded surfaces
  • Verify all fitting positions, port locations, alignment, and fastener positions before applying — with standard 5200, repositioning is possible for up to approximately 48 hours before the surface skins over, but becomes progressively more difficult as cure advances
  • Typical permanent 5200 applications: keel attachment, hull planking structural bonds, deck-to-hull seams, below-waterline through-hull structural bedding, and motor mounts bonded to fiberglass transoms
  • If future disassembly may be required: use the serviceable 3M 4200FC White 10 oz (06560) instead — same polyurethane family, strong hold, but can be disassembled for maintenance without cutting or grinding

10 oz Cartridge — Size & Format

  • Requires a standard 10 oz caulking gun (not included)
  • Best for full structural seam runs, multiple through-hull or fitting installations, deck-to-hull seam bonding, and production work where the larger volume reduces tube changes mid-job and lowers cost-per-oz
  • For smaller applications or where a caulking gun is not available, use the 05203 (3 oz) squeeze tube format — same standard cure 5200 White formula, no gun required
  • Cut the nozzle at 45° to the desired bead size; puncture the inner foil seal before dispensing
  • After use, leave the nozzle cap in place to slow skin-over of remaining product in the cartridge; standard 5200’s 48-hour tack-free time means the cartridge tip will skin over slowly if capped promptly after use

Application Notes

  • Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, wax, and loose material — wipe with acetone or isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry completely before applying
  • Apply to one or both surfaces and press together firmly; secure with fasteners or clamps during cure to maintain joint position
  • Moisture initiates cure — higher humidity and warmer temperatures accelerate surface cure; cooler or drier conditions extend the tack-free and full cure times beyond the stated 48-hour / 5–7-day specifications
  • Full cure 5–7 days — do not stress the joint, immerse below the waterline, or load the bond until fully cured
  • Uncured product: clean up with acetone or MEK. Cured product: must be cut or abraded for removal
  • Wear gloves — uncured polyurethane is difficult to remove from skin and clothing

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between standard 5200 (this product) and 5200 Fast Cure (06520)?
A: Same permanent bond strength at full cure — the only difference is speed. Standard 5200 is tack free in 48 hours and fully cured in 5–7 days, giving more working time to position complex assemblies before the surface skins over. Fast Cure is tack free in 1 hour and fully cured in approximately 24 hours. Choose standard 5200 when you need maximum working time or the vessel won’t be launched for several days; choose Fast Cure when you need faster return to service.

Q: Is standard 5200 stronger than Fast Cure 5200?
A: No — bond strength at full cure is identical. Standard cure provides a longer working window, not a stronger bond. Both formulas reach the same permanent, high-strength result at full cure.

Q: Can 5200 be removed if I need to disassemble the fitting later?
A: No — 5200 (both standard and Fast Cure) is a permanent adhesive. Separation after full cure requires cutting or grinding the bond line and damages bonded surfaces. If there is any possibility you will need to remove the fitting for maintenance, use the serviceable 3M 4200FC White 10 oz (06560) instead.

Q: How long before I can launch after applying below the waterline?
A: Full cure is 5–7 days — do not immerse below the waterline until fully cured. Tack free in 48 hours means the surface has skinned over, not that the bond is at full strength. Temperature and humidity affect cure rate — cooler or drier conditions extend cure time beyond 5–7 days.

Q: Does the 10 oz cartridge require a caulking gun?
A: Yes — a standard 10 oz caulking gun is required (not included). For applications without a gun, use the 05203 3 oz squeeze tube — same standard cure White 5200 formula, no gun required.
