3M 06520 Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 Fast Cure White 10 oz Cartridge — Permanent One-Component Moisture-Curing Polyurethane | Flexible, Weathering & Saltwater Resistant | Structural Bonds to Aluminum, Wood, Gel Coat & Fiberglass | Above & Below Waterline | Tack Free 1 Hour, Full Cure 24 Hours

3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 Fast Cure White (06520) is the Fast Cure version of 3M’s industry-standard 5200 permanent marine polyurethane. One-component, high-strength, moisture-curing, gap-filling polyurethane that bonds aluminum, wood, gel coat, and fiberglass with a permanent, flexible, waterproof seal above and below the waterline. Weathering and saltwater resistant. Fast Cure: tack free in 1 hour, full cure in approximately 24 hours — significantly faster return to service than standard 5200 (tack free 48 hrs, full cure 5–7 days). Permanent bond — separation after full cure requires cutting or grinding. White. 10 oz cartridge for standard caulking gun.

Part Specifications

5200 Fast Cure vs Standard 5200 — Choosing the Right Cure Speed

Both this product (06520) and the standard 5200 White cartridge (06500) produce the same permanent, high-strength 5200 bond. The only difference is cure speed:

  • 5200 Fast Cure (this product — 06520): Tack free 1 hour, full cure approximately 24 hours. Faster return to service — best when the repair must be completed and the vessel launched or moved within 24–48 hours, or when a shorter open work window is acceptable.
  • Standard 5200 White (06500 10 oz | 05203 3 oz): Tack free 48 hours, full cure 5–7 days. The longer cure window provides more working time to position and adjust complex multi-piece assemblies before the surface skins over. The extended full cure is appropriate when the joint will be immediately immersed or placed under structural load.
  • Bond strength at full cure is identical: Standard and Fast Cure 5200 produce equally permanent, equally strong bonds at full cure. The Fast Cure version reaches that strength faster — it does not sacrifice bond quality for speed.
  • Fast Cure also available in smaller sizes: 06535 (1 oz) and 05220 (3 oz) — same formula without requiring a caulking gun.

Permanent Bond — Critical Consideration Before Applying

  • 5200 is a permanent adhesive sealant — once fully cured, joints cannot be disassembled without cutting or grinding the bond line, which damages bonded surfaces
  • Verify all fitting positions, port locations, alignment, and fastener positions before applying — repositioning after the surface skins over (1 hour tack-free window) is not possible without damage
  • Typical permanent 5200 applications: keel attachment, hull planking structural bonds, deck-to-hull seams, below-waterline through-hull structural bedding, and motor mounts bonded to fiberglass transoms
  • If future disassembly may be required: use the serviceable 3M 4200FC White 10 oz (06560) instead — same polyurethane family, strong hold, but can be disassembled for maintenance

10 oz Cartridge — Size & Format

  • Requires a standard 10 oz caulking gun (not included)
  • Best for full structural seam runs, multiple through-hull or fitting installations, deck-to-hull seam bonding, and production work where the larger volume reduces tube changes mid-job and lowers cost-per-oz
  • For smaller applications or where a caulking gun is not available, use the 06535 (1 oz) or 05220 (3 oz) squeeze tube formats
  • Cut the nozzle at 45° to the desired bead size; puncture the inner foil seal before dispensing
  • After use, leave the nozzle cap in place to slow skin-over of remaining product in the cartridge

Application Notes

  • Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, wax, and loose material — wipe with acetone or isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry completely before applying
  • Apply to one or both surfaces and press together firmly; maintain position during the cure window
  • Moisture initiates cure — higher humidity and warmer temperatures accelerate surface cure; tack free in approximately 1 hour under normal conditions
  • Full cure 24 hours — do not stress the joint, immerse below the waterline, or load the bond until fully cured
  • Uncured product: clean up with acetone or MEK. Cured product: must be cut or abraded for removal
  • Wear gloves — uncured polyurethane is difficult to remove from skin and clothing
  • 5200 Fast Cure is a permanent bond — tack free in 1 hour means the surface has skinned over, not that the bond is weak or repositionable; the fast cure window is shorter than standard 5200 but the permanence is identical

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between 5200 Fast Cure (this product) and standard 5200 (06500)?
A: Same permanent bond strength at full cure — the only difference is speed. Fast Cure is tack free in 1 hour and fully cured in approximately 24 hours. Standard 5200 is tack free in 48 hours and fully cured in 5–7 days. Choose Fast Cure when you need faster return to service; choose standard 5200 when you need more working time to position complex assemblies.

Q: Is 5200 Fast Cure as strong as standard 5200?
A: Yes — bond strength at full cure is identical. Fast Cure reaches that full strength in approximately 24 hours rather than 5–7 days. The cure speed does not affect the permanence or strength of the finished bond.

Q: Can 5200 Fast Cure be removed if I need to disassemble the fitting later?
A: No — 5200 (both standard and Fast Cure) is a permanent adhesive. Separation after full cure requires cutting or grinding the bond line and damages bonded surfaces. If there is any possibility you will need to remove the fitting for maintenance, use the serviceable 3M 4200FC White 10 oz (06560) instead.

Q: How long before I can launch after applying below the waterline?
A: Full cure is approximately 24 hours — do not immerse below the waterline until fully cured. Tack free in 1 hour means the surface has skinned over, not that the bond is at full strength. Temperature and humidity affect cure rate — cooler or drier conditions extend cure time.

Q: Does the 10 oz cartridge require a caulking gun?
A: Yes — a standard 10 oz caulking gun is required (not included). For applications without a gun, use the 06535 1 oz or 05220 3 oz squeeze tube formats — same Fast Cure White formula, no gun required.
